4 Key Points When Building a Houston Custom Home
There are 4 key points that most people don’t think about when building a home in Houston, TX. This goes for regular builder spec homes, as well as custom homes. Overlooking these key issues when building a custom home can be more painful, since custom homes are more expensive and usually the result of a life-long dream. Jonathon Casada Custom Homes wants you to be satisfied, not just with our work, but with the overall product. In some cases implementing these key points is just not an option, but, when possible, they should be followed.
Key Point #1 – Make sure your driveway is at least a double driveway. The long, skinny driveways that are so common in Houston, are not user-friendly at all. Every time you have a party, a holiday get-together, or just your everyday comings and goings, having to shuffle the cars between your spouse and teenagers is a huge headache. If it can be avoided, why not? If the only option is a long skinny driveway, look into also having a front half-circle drive to make the parking at your home simpler for you, as well as guests. These can be a prominent, beautiful, and inviting feature of your Houston custom home, with a fountain or manicured flower garden in the center as an eye-catching architectural accessory.
Key Point #2 – Make sure you choose to be on a cul-de-sac and not a through street. This helps your home from being inundated with unnecessary traffic and gives your home a “bonus” protection from crime. Taking the kids out to play becomes safer, and usually your neighbors will look out for each other and know who should be on your street and who shouldn’t.
Key Point #3 – Make sure your backyard is large enough to accommodate any future plans. Often people think they’ll never want a pool or large garden or any of the other options available. After getting settled into your new home and really making it your space, though, most likely you’ll want to add your personal touch to the backyard as well. If your backyard is the size of a postage stamp, this simply won’t work. The proportions will be awkward and using the outdoor space won’t be user-friendly. Living in Houston, you’ve probably witnessed this yourself – a massive home, with a pool awkwardly positioned a few feet from the french doors. Or a late-in-life avid gardener wanting space for their new endeavor, but having to stick to gardening in clay pots. If you are building your dream home, there’s no reason to short-change the backyard space.
Key Point #4 – A one-story home is much more user-friendly, especially as one ages. However, two-story homes are ideal for the childhood years. Having children’s bedrooms and a gameroom upstairs is usually less of a headache for parents than having everyone and everything all on one floor, but actually handling the maintenance on a two story-home and maneuvering around it can be quite cumbersome. Your decision to build a 1 or 2 story home will depend on where you are in life and what you want to get out of your home. If you do decide to build a 2 story Houston custom home, we recommend building two master bedrooms downstairs. Within the last 5 years or so, this has become more and more common and keeps your home as user-friendly as possible.
